Working with my clients, we have done a combination of these. The top vendors that offer these services do an excellent job from soup to nuts - usually. They have the facilities to do the analytics if you do not, can help preserve anonymity (if that is an objective), know how to promote and market the instrument to yield high participation rates, and provide you the opportunity to add several customized questions. They also aren't free :-). Therefore, to *maybe* cut costs I will help an institution customize their survey and do the entire thing internally. That part alone is not expensive, and most institutions I work with already have a license to a tool like SurveyMonkey. Where it gets "iffy" is on the analytics side of the house. Not all have the right staff to perform the requisite analysis of the data - and you need more than number-crunching. I think you will find that those who have done their own have the infrastructure and staff to go it alone — those who do not tend to outsource. John John H. Taylor Principal, John H. Good morning, all - May I ask if your institutions have done alumni attitude surveys over the past several years? If so, did you use a homegrown survey, or did you use a particular vendor's survey? Many thanks! Michael Halverson, Ed.D. The last two I did or helped with were homegrown - but we used online tools. We used Qualtrics at the big university and MailChimp at the high school. I'd recommend 10 questions or fewer, and if you ask open-ended questions, make sure your team can do the text mining that would make the answers useful to you. --Marianne ________________________________________ Marianne M. My concern with vendors is twofold: they are expensive and, in my limited experience with only one vendor, don't have a statistician on the team. For example, the vendor we used stated upon delivery that the results were biased, but didn't attempt to statistically adjust for that bias. Sheesh! So we'll need to take the raw data and adjust for non-response bias ourselves. The graphs were pretty, though.
