  • 1.  Stewarding Matching Gifts

Corie, I changed the subject line from the YourCause reference as this discussion goes well beyond one vendor! I cannot more emphatically state that it is crucial to your fundraising program to steward donors who have made gifts happen through matching contributions. You would not have received the match had they not worked for the company (or their spouse, or were on their board, etc.), plus they had to make a gift of their own AND complete paperwork to make the match happen. They deserve than just recognition (soft-credit), but specific thanks! At both Duke and NC State (and a gracious many of my clients), notifying original donors when a corresponding match came in was automatic. At NC State it was a customized email. At Duke, it was a customized letter. And at every institution where we used an acknowledgment program, we could point to NEW gifts made as a result. Employees tended to forget about the match - often made almost a year earlier. Letting them know that gift resulted in more revenue jogs their memory, and they try it again! Back in the olden days when I and others ran the annual Matching Gifts Symposium the importance of this stewardship was a mainstay in the discussion. Do it! John John H. Taylor Principal, John H.
