  • 1.  Raiser's Edge vs. Salesforce

    Posted 03-15-2019 09:57 AM
Good morning, We currently use Banner Advancement and are looking to possibly convert to a new system post-campaign. Our campus is slowly moving to Salesforce (Enrollment, Finance, etc.) Some in Advancement want to move to Raiser's Edge. Has anyone gone through the process to decide on one or the other? Any insight on the hows/whys is greatly appreciated! I’m assuming that by Raiser’s Edge, you mean Raiser’s Edge NXT? Or Blackbaud’s CRM? We are currently going through this exercise, some of the key considerations, not in priority order: * Ease of direct integration with other campus and other systems such as your online giving, events management, volunteer management, etc. * Degree of customization capabilities using point and click declarative interfaces vs. “hard core” coding in SQL, Javascript or similar languages. * Ability to automate workflows and processes within the application using a declarative interface. * Ability to imbed data integrity rules directly within dialogs and screens using a declarative interface. * Availability of an extensive application ecosystem to extend the functionality of your system beyond what a base product provides. * Technical expertise within your Advancement shop and with your central IT shop. * Ability to access your data directly with tools like Tableau for analytics and reporting. * Strength of reporting and dashboarding capabilities within the product. * Batch processing capabilities. * Ability to turn field history on an off for any table in the system. * Robust system administrative tools, access to logs, enterprise grade security. * Extensive customer support and training offerings. * Extensive ecosystem of implementation partners. * Frequency, scope and breadth of regular vendor product updates and enhancements. * Total capital outlay, and ongoing licensing costs. * Extensive and robust user community, user groups, regular regional meetings and conferences. There are a number of others, and all platforms also have their inherent limitations. If anyone would like to have a direct conversation, feel free to email me off list and we can set up a time for a call. Hello, This is a great list! Thank you for posting, Brian. As a consultant who helps with assessment of needs and operations, and setting the organizations' data strategy and processes, I completely agree with Brian's list of considerations. It is also true that all platforms have their own inherent strengths and limitations. One item I'd add is that, Salesforce is a "platform" whereas RE and many other systems are products. An important difference is that a *platform *supports or easily combines with many different types of data (e.g. advancement, enrollment, LMS etc)., you need to add components such as online payment processing system, to create a complete solution. Specifically for Salesforce, these components are available, but need to be purchased separately with individual vendors. Conversely, a *product *typically comes with all these features already built in, however, typically support for various types of data is limited or non-existent. An in-depth needs analysis would point at which approach would suit the organization better. Also, after the transition to the new system is complete, it would be a good idea to review processes and see if any of them need to be re-engineered, to bring in efficiency. Correction: The following line: " It is also true that all platforms have their own inherent strengths and limitations. " Should read as: " It is also true that all platforms and products have their own inherent strengths and limitations.
