See IRS Publication 1771. Your receipt must reflect the total amount paid, provide a full description and value for benefits provided, and indicate that the deductible portion is limited to the difference between the two. I encourage solicitation material to include similar information so that donors know up front what is - and isn't - deductible. John John H. Taylor Principal, John H. Good Morning, Apologies ahead of time if this has been discussed previously but I was unable to locate the answer. Here at Drexel University, the topic of what should be noted on event flyers for donors is currently being discussed and I want to be sure I know the correct answer. We have always noted what the tax deductible portion of a contribution would be. For example if a donor gives a $10,000 contribution to the Honor Level for the Golf Outing, $8,500 is tax deductible. My colleague here at Drexel mentioned that we should be noting what the non-deductible portion ($1,500) is instead as the IRS would consider our current format as “giving tax advice”. I was unable to find anything supporting this statement. Before changing how we do things, I wanted to confirm what other institutions are doing and of course how they should be handled. Reggie: In addition to the excellent advice John gave you, there 's one more thing to consider. A charity can *never* assure their donor that a gift *is* deductible. Deductibility is ultimately dependent on each donor's tax situation, which to the charity and its agents is usually unknown and unknowable. In addition, saying a gift is deductible rather than eligible for deductibility puts the charity in the position of offering tax advice - a definite no-no. [S&W_clr-small] Michael L.
