And then it becomes more difficult when the Donor Employee and Donor Match Company money come on the same bankwire from a Community Foundation. We enter these as two different transactions on the Community Foundation and then soft credit the Person on one transaction, and the Company on the other transaction. We were finding that we couldn’t see any connection between the Person and the Company in reporting, and have ended up making a note in a Relationship field. For the Person “matched by company name” , for the Company “match for person’s name”
Any other ideas on this??

Subject: Re: [FUNDSVCS] Connecting Donor Advised Funds to Alumni
While I have offered this opinion before, I will share it again.
These individual funds within a DAF or Community Foundation are not legal entities. They are just what they are - funds within a financial organization. It's a bit like my having an investment account - or even an IRA. With the big difference being that those DAF/Community Foundation FUNDS ARE NOT MY MONEY. So I tend to shy away from creating a record on my database for non-legal entities.
Certainly, a legally established trust or private foundation is a legal entity and those can and should have their own records. And I certainly can link those to an individual's record showing the relationship.
But when a gift comes from the John Taylor Fund at Fidelity, the legal gift is from Fidelity. But linking that gift to my record for soft-credit I have done all I need to do to show the relationship.
I recognize that some institutions will create records for these non-entities anyway. And that's your call. I feel it adds work to my staff. Furthermore, when doing donor counts at the end of the year, no matter how many "funds" you have note gifts coming from at Fidelity (or whatever), there is only one legal donor - Fidelity.

Gwen,
We are also a CA school. We don't actually make this association in the database, but what a great idea! Would a relationship code for this association work?

We are wondering how to best associate an individual with their DAF (or Family Foundation, Trust, etc) in our database. We use Ellucian Colleague and are wondering how / where others make this link or track the relationship in the database?
Thank you,
Gwen
