  • 1.  Unsolicited "Grants" appeal?

    Posted 03-05-2019 04:24 PM
Happy Tuesday! I was asked "Should we set up an appeal called Unsolicited Grants (similar to Third Party Unsolicited events) so we know we got grants we did not ask for, and then have a way to identify them and follow up for possible future grants?" My response was "No, because foundations and companies often just say "grant" as a general term. They are not grants in any way shape or form (unless someone actually submitted a request). They are just unsolicited gifts. If we want to know how much came in from Foundations we can run the #s on the constituent code of Foundations (which we report on already for the board report). We DO go after those gifts via the lapsed appeal, unless they specifically state a proposal structure is needed." But then I got to thinking, do any of you use a Grant - unsolicited appeal for donations you get where the letter says "this is a grant from XYZ Foundation" when you haven't submitted a proposal to them? I have always thought it was their generic term for "donation" and instead of saying "this is a donation" they say "grant." Thoughts? Hi Rose, Grants where no proposal was submitted and you just receive an outright check from a Foundation are called "non-specific grants." See p.68 Section 6.1.2. in CASE Reporting Guidelines if you have it. Many institutions just enter them as gifts, but if you want to track them there's no harm in adding a code that identifies them as a non-specific grant. Just make sure that there are no conditions or expectations imposed. -Eric Eric F.
