Focusing on giving participation as a metric can get people riled up. But there are institutions that view giving participation as a validation of their institutional mission, a measure of customer satisfaction, and a demonstration of broad constituent support. Remember that "participation" is not just a metric, but also an important case for support message for many. Yet, it's often presented in the context of guilt -- why aren't more of you giving?
