Erica, the requests asks only for recognition credit - not a tax receipt. I'd for sure do the former. But only if they can provide you with some substantiation as to the value of their assistance. You are essentially correct that this is not a gift as it seems like a combination of partial interest and service. John John H. Taylor Principal, John H. Your internal staff told you that this was going to likely save them "thousands of dollars." Ask them to itemize what costs they will be avoiding and use that as an estimate. I'm a bit leery of some of their planned expenses including nannies. I've not seen an institution willing to pay for those expenses in other similar situations. But if you would then include those costs, too. John John H. Taylor Principal, John H. Good morning, peers! I received a unique request from one of our Schools, who is hosting an event this Spring. One of their donors has offered to put up several of the event participants, their families, and possibly nannies, at their home vs. having to book multiple hotel rooms. This seems like partial interest to me, but I wanted to reach out to the experts: Greetings! Thanks for talking to me yesterday about this possible gift in kind situation. We have a donor that would love to get some type of recognition credit for housing some of our guest artists for our [event]. They are putting up several musicians and their small children and a nanny in their home for about 10 days. It's likely going to save us thousands of dollars of hotel costs. Do you need more specifics? I'm sorry I don't have more exact details, but I can chase them down if you do! Thanks! John, Thank you! How do I request the donor (or school?) to substantiate the value of their assistance, perhaps AirBnBs.com comps?
