Same here for our 5Ks. We looked at what similar races would cost to participate in and use that as an FMV of the benefit of the actual race. Then add in the shirt.

Same concept - but the devil is in the details. Many of those 5K promotions are actually misleading as they do not account for the t-shirt (or other swag) that is given and subject to the IRS QPQ requirements.
But as long as participants do not receive anything (but do give away sweat), then you are in good shape (literally and figuratively).
