Hi Beth, I do it on occasion, when dealing with high touch donors and relationships and with my Prospect Development hat on rather than a gift processing hat. *Megan C. Hi! I'm reviewing our current business rules around IMO/IHO gifts and wanted to get a sense of best practices specifically around creating relationships. Currently we are creating a friend relationship between the donor, the IMO or IHO individual, and the individual receiving the acknowledgement - although it's usually unclear what the relationship is between the donor and the other individuals. Most of these are online gifts. The tribute is recorded on the gift transaction, but I don't think we should also be creating the relationships. What are others doing? We are currently in RE moving to salesforce in the summer, so I want to make sure that the business rules we set now will work in SF. Hi Beth, We do not currently record a friend relationship in addition to the Tribute itself, but a gift/tribute/notification report would show those connections depending on how you ran it. If we know there is a familial relationship, we definitely record that under the relationship tab.  Ruth Jones _______________________________________________________ Ruth Jones, CFRE, Director of Fund Development Presbyterian Manor - The House of Hope Ph: 940-696-8644 Fax: 940-691-3742 rjones@presmanor.org www.presmanor.org On ‎Tuesday‎, ‎January‎ ‎29‎, ‎2019‎ ‎02‎:‎56‎:‎53‎ ‎PM‎ ‎CST, Beth Friedmann <bfriedmann@AJWS.ORG> wrote: Hi!  I’m reviewing our current business rules around IMO/IHO gifts and wanted to get a sense of best practices specifically around creating relationships.  Currently we are creating a friend relationship between the donor, the IMO or IHO individual, and the individual receiving the acknowledgement - although it’s usually unclear what the relationship is between the donor and the other individuals.  Most of these are online gifts.  The tribute is recorded on the gift transaction, but I don’t think we should also be creating the relationships.  What are others doing?    We are currently in RE moving to salesforce in the summer, so I want to make sure that the business rules we set now will work in SF.   Thank you, Beth   Beth Friedmann, Director of Development Operations American Jewish World Service 45 West 36th Street, New York, NY 10018 t 212.792.2817 f 212.792.2930 www.ajws.org | facebook |twitter

Hi Beth, We ask for the relationship for all tribute gifts. If the person is a relative or a former Wesleyan roommate or suitemate, we create the relationship in RE. Anything else, we do not. A question that is slightly different, but in this case related (no pun intended), is “How did this person come into our sphere?” (as opposed to “To whom in our sphere is this person related?”). We have a note type called “Unit of Origin” that can reflect not only the unit (specific museum, etc.) with which this constituent first interacted, resulting in the creation of a record in the database, but also the specific occasion. That’s often an event to which they were invited, but could also be used to note that they came to our attention when they made a gift in tribute to a specific person. It can be helpful in reviewing a population of constituents to get a sense of whether they might have an affinity to the organization, or whether their relationship is more indirect/secondary. My US$0.02 worth; the usual disclaimers apply. Good luck! Alan Alan S. Hejnal Data Quality Manager Smithsonian Institution - Office of Advancement 600 Maryland Avenue SW, Suite 600E P.O.
