A question that is slightly different, but in this case related (no pun intended), is “How did this person come into our sphere?” (as opposed to “To whom in our sphere is this person related?”).
We have a note type called “Unit of Origin” that can reflect not only the unit (specific museum, etc.) with which this constituent first interacted, resulting in the creation of a record in the database, but also the specific occasion. That’s often an event to which they were invited, but could also be used to note that they came to our attention when they made a gift in tribute to a specific person. It can be helpful in reviewing a population of constituents to get a sense of whether they might have an affinity to the organization, or whether their relationship is more indirect/secondary.
My US$0.02 worth; the usual disclaimers apply.
Good luck!

Subject: Re: [FUNDSVCS] Tribute gifts & relationships
Hi Beth,
We ask for the relationship for all tribute gifts. If the person is a relative or a former Wesleyan roommate or suitemate, we create the relationship in RE. Anything else, we do not. Hope this helps.
Julie

Hi! I’m reviewing our current business rules around IMO/IHO gifts and wanted to get a sense of best practices specifically around creating relationships. Currently we are creating a friend relationship between the donor, the IMO or IHO individual, and the individual receiving the acknowledgement - although it’s usually unclear what the relationship is between the donor and the other individuals. Most of these are online gifts. The tribute is recorded on the gift transaction, but I don’t think we should also be creating the relationships. What are others doing?
We are currently in RE moving to salesforce in the summer, so I want to make sure that the business rules we set now will work in SF.
Thank you,
Beth
