Not if the purchases were "above and beyond." Those clearly are not deductible but the initial fee - less the fair market value of every benefit received - would remain a gift. John John H. Correct on all counts. Do remember, too, that anyone who wins something valued at $600 or more will have to be issued a 1099 and pay taxes on the value of their winnings. John John H. Hi, One of the units at the university is hosting a golf tournament. At the tournament, participants can make purchases to participate in golfing contests to win prizes, in addition to their registration donations. These prizes consist of a new car, a kayak, and gift cards. A portion of their registration donation is charitable, depending on the players' level of participation. If a player enters in one of the contests would this negate the charitable portion of their registration donation? Thanks John! The fee to participate in one of the contests is no more than $20.00. Just to be sure I’m clear, this amount will be all non-charitable, correct? If the player wins one of the contests, the portion of his initial registration donation will remain charitable, correct? Thanks for your help with this!
