I thought some might be interested in the latest on H.R. 651. Few believe it will see much more than the light of day - if even that. But I applaud CASE and others for helping promote initiatives such as this. John John H. Taylor Principal, John H. Henry Cuellar (D-TX) and Chris Smith (R-NJ) re-introduced the Charitable Giving Tax Deduction Act (H.R. 651 <https://www.congress.gov/bill/116th-congress/house-bill/651>), a bill that would allow non-itemizing taxpayers to deduct charitable gifts without limitation. The bill is identical to legislation they introduced in the last Congress. In a press release <https://chrissmith.house.gov/news/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=401680> announcing the bill, Rep. Smith stated, "Many Americans want to give generously to charities, but they may not be able to afford to do so now with the changes implemented in the 2018 tax law." Rep. Cuellar noted, "This bipartisan bill not only encourages us to help our fellow neighbors, but it also makes sure that taxpayers can receive their due deduction for charitable giving if they choose not to itemize." And CASE President and CEO Sue Cunningham noted that the bill encourages "all Americans to support student scholarships, research, faculty and academic programs that help educational institutions provide transformational learning opportunities." CASE and our colleagues in the Charitable Giving Coalition support this legislation. We will continue to keep you posted on this bill and other bills that would expand the charitable deduction to non-itemizers.
