  • 1.  Degree Participation Counting - Primary or All? Poll

    Posted 01-22-2019 09:36 AM
Hello everyone, My Director would like to get a sense of how others use Multiple Degrees (such as someone who received a BA and then an MSW, for example) in their Participation vs Revenue/Financial reports. Do you count: 1) Only the Primary degree for Financial 2) All degrees for Financial 3) Only the Primary degree for participation 4) All degrees for Participation (for example, resulting in BA/MS being counted in both categories) Thank you! At Duke and NC State we never had any such report. We tracked degrees for alumni participation purposes only and that was done in accordance with VSE criteria - which generally have you counting an alum once with undergraduate degree holders trumping. Thanks, Marianne, I think that is what we are inclined to do here - participation but not financial. - Anne Re: Degree Participation Counting - Primary or All? Poll From:Marianne Pelletier <marianne@STAUPELL.COM> fundsvcs@LISTSERV.FUNDSVCS.ORG Tue, 22 Jan 2019 15:49:46 +0000 The hard part of a question like this is that if you credit the donor's giving to each of her degree levels, then your totals are seriously inflated. It sometimes takes months to explain why the totals under each degree level do not match the overall gift total. So, you'll want some agreement from your leadership on how to total those amounts. However, if you're just counting donors at different giving levels, you can then count a donor in each of her categories. You would still have to be clear that the sum of these counts are not your overarching donor count, but my experience tells me that people have an easier time understanding double counting donors over total gifts. So then you could show that you have 300 donors with bachelors degrees at the $1 million level, for example. --Marianne Marianne M. Hi Anne, We only count their Primary, as we only want to count a person once in our totals. So it would be 1 and 3 for us. Cheers, David David B. Ritchie
