When you "count" them is completely up to you although I am a firm believer in counting as of the day I enter. I personally have never like the concept of "backdating." Regardless, these gifts are 2019 gifts from the donor perspective. If they were not "charged" or approved until 2019 then the IRS says that is when the gift was made. My "Date of Gift" document at the download site explains further. John John H. Taylor Principal, John H. Correct. The proof for tax purposes should their be an audit is the date the charge appears on THEIR credit card statement. Happy Friday Colleagues! Requesting your input on the following: We had a handful of online donations that came in (via Online Express) within our time zone to count for 12/31/18, however our merchant report lists them as 1/1/19 since they are on the East Coast. Based on their time stamps (which we captured), should we make an internal decision to count them as 12/31/18 gifts? We think our business office will comply with whatever we decide - we just need to make our decision on industry best practices. In turn, would our donor be able to argue the opposite? They are on the west coast, and so to them it was still 9:30pm in 2018 when they submitted their online donation. They are not made aware that our processor is on the East Coast. Am I overthinking this? ☺ Dina From: Advancement Services Discussion List <FUNDSVCS@LISTSERV.FUNDSVCS.ORG> On Behalf Of John Taylor Sent: Friday, January 11, 2019 2:52 PM To: FUNDSVCS@LISTSERV.FUNDSVCS.ORG Subject: Re: [FUNDSVCS] Inquiry: cusp of midnight online gifts When you "count" them is completely up to you although I am a firm believer in counting as of the day I enter. Happy Friday Dina!! We would list the gift as a 2018 gift in our system. Especially since it was 12/31/18 where they lived. Cheers, David David B. Ritchie
