Okay - we are talking about the same thing! Good! Yes, I agree that an opportunity is being missed! And my earlier note suggested how to take advantage of that opportunity. Your endowment donors receive an annual report on the performance of their endowment at the end of the fiscal year, right? Well, these good folk deserve a similar report. The only difference is timing. While it is true that finance normally handles the 1099, that does not mean that they must mail it! I would work with finance on issuing both the 1099 and an annual stewardship letter of sorts. It does not need to be as fancy as your endowment reports, but you can use the excuse of the 1099 to steward these donors as well. John John H. Taylor Principal, John H. One word of caution/advice. If you send both the 1099 and the stewardship letter/report in one envelope, do make sure the envelope is stamped: 2018 TAX DOCUMENT ENCLOSED. You do not want the donor inadvertently tossing the envelope thinking its a solicitation! John H. Taylor Principal, John H. Hi John! Happy New Year! We are talking about the same type of accounts—at least, I believe we are. What I am learning is that several years back, the University asked the annuitants if they were comfortable with direct deposit. With the exception of one individual, all said they preferred it. Thus, we do not mail live checks. Instead the payment is deposited directly into their bank account. Finance also issues the 1099. But, so far as I can determine, Advancement has not been doing any type of a stewardship letter—which seems a mis-step to me. Wouldn’t we want to use this as an opportunity to thank them annually? But I would deeply value your opinion—or the opinion of others on this. Many thanks.
