  • 1.  What Age Do You Book Planned Gifts?

    Posted 08-14-2024 02:08 PM

    Hi All,

We are considering lowering our minimum age of booking/counting revocable Planned Gifts.  I've done a little online digging and the minimum age to count a PG ranges from age 60 to 75 including one source that states "For donors younger than 70, one option is to say that the youngest donor needs to be at least 50 years old for the bequest to count at all; then if you count a bequest at age 50 at 60% of value, every year between ages 50 and 70 is an increment of 2%." (As a gift processor that last one does not sound like fun).

What age does your organization book/count a revocable PG and what is the reasoning for it?

    Thank you!

    Sarah

Sarah, you may first want to review the latest CASE Standards. Those published in 2021 urged counting these only if the donor will be 65 or older by the end of the counting period.

However, keep in mind that this recommendation is for campaign counting purposes. The limit is designed to ensure parity when comparing campaign total apples to apples. If there's no consistency in counting and reporting, there is no way to conduct comparisons effectively.

However, while following the CASE Standards for campaigns is important, it does not prevent you from recording and counting revocable bequests made at any age in your internal numbers.

I tend to agree that an age limit should exist in all reporting. A revocable bequest is already something you cannot count on. And, if made by a 35-year-old, the proceeds will not carry the same weight - or fund the same programs - as a bequest made by a 95-year-old.

These decisions are best left to your Gift Acceptance Committee. What is important is that once a decision is made, it is consistently followed.
