  • 1.  UK to US Tax Benefit?

    Posted 02-19-2024 09:45 AM

    Hi all,

My US-based college has a donor in the UK who wants to make a gift that will give him a tax benefit. I've been exploring some pass-through organizations that could make this work, and came across the UK Online Giving Foundation. We've received very small gifts from them before, but mostly payroll deductions. Does anyone have experience working with this company for larger gifts (around $10k) or know if they process outright gifts outside of payroll or corporate matches?

I also saw Charities Aid Foundation come up as an option, but it seems that would require the donor to set up their own DAF. We're hoping to find an option that's simplest for the donor (and us).
I'd appreciate any feedback or suggestions.
    Best regards,
    Meghan

The UK Online Giving Foundation is a partner of Benevity. Donations to the UK Online Giving Foundation are donations to a UK registered DAF. There is no guarantee the donation will reach your college (see their FAQ). I am not aware of any maximum donation amounts - although they do have a $200 minimum for some countries.

Whether a donation to it will provide a UK tax benefit is something the donor will need to ask of their tax advisor. It will NOT result in a US tax-deduction. It WILL result in fees being attached to the donation just as is true with the American Online Giving Foundation.

Thanks for the background. The donor wants to claim the benefit in the UK, so we'll make sure they know to check in with their tax advisor. Are you aware of any other pass-throughs that US nonprofits have used for this purpose?

I do not. And I do not think you should be suggesting any organization the donor might consider. You will be blamed if things go south or fees are excessive.

Your donor is better served conducting their own research in concert with their financial advisor.
