  • 1.  Third-Party Payment Processing

    Posted 12-19-2023 01:31 PM

We are starting see a shift in companies wanting to donate via wire rather than check (which makes sense), however they using various third-party payment processors (never the same one) such as Bill Pay, Uncommon Giving, etc.  We have requested to pay by check, but they will only send payment through their payment processor.  Are others seeing this same trend and if so, how are you managing this process?  I am finding it hard to manage all of the accounts with logging in for reports for reconciliation (which also usually require 2-factor authentication).  Also, many of these donations are likely to be one-time payments so we are having to create these accounts with our financial information for these one-time gifts that could be a small amount.

Would appreciate any thoughts and tips on how others are managing this process and what resources they may be using.

    Thank you!

We've been hearing this from several of our clients, too. One approach is to refuse to create an account/profile with a processor until the amount they process exceeds some value. If you don't create a profile, all of these processors will send you a monthly check, but they will charge you a check fee. You can be more assertive and actually de-list from a processor, but I think that just becomes a whack-a-mole problem. Once a processor is bringing in enough revenue on a regular basis, creating an account and reconciling it is probably worth your while.
