    Hi everyone,

Veering off the general gift realm but looking to see if you have term limits on naming opportunities, and if so what the limits are. Your feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Many of my clients do - and we offered these at NC State fifteen years ago.

I prefer a set number of years rather than "the expected usefulness" of the facility. Ten years, with first right of refusal, tends to be what I see most.

Thanks, John! Ten years seems pretty standard.

    Good afternoon,

Our standard is 10 years, but really we can do it up to 20 year limits. We have had requests for 5 years as well. For all corporate donors, they can not have a life-term naming. They must have a termed naming up to 20 years.

Example of our recommendations (term value=10 years here).

What is the process for "renewing" the naming?  Is additional giving required?

    Thanks,

    To both comments:
    • "Term limits" are not universal, Tara. However, they are becoming more popular. The significant annual increases in facility upkeep and renovation drive this. Institutions use these terms to ensure they continue to receive the funding necessary to keep those building standing. Additionally, many organizations are adding an endowment component to a naming gift for new construction to help offset those maintenance costs.
    • Nancy, there is no universal strategy for renewing a naming. It does almost always involve more money. However, if it's a renewal versus a new naming, the original donors are often offered a discount.
