We have two students who applied and received awards to fund their research projects and then present them at a research symposium sponsored by the foundation that provided the award. The faculty have asked us to deposit the money as gifts and then make it available to the students for their projects. Should this type of award be considered a gift?

    Maybe.

Who owns the research/IP when all is said and done? The determination should be consistent with institutional policies regarding "sponsored research."

For the grants to be counted, Stevens must have sole IP ownership. Not the students and not the Foundation making the award.

CASE offers one exception to this rule in the new Standards. If the research or IP is freely available to the public ("for the public good"), it can also be counted.
