  • 1.  stock gift from multiple non-spouse donors

We have received a gift of 215 shares of stock. For the donor, the source documents list two people who are siblings, not spouses. The phrasing is "Gift of John Doe & Jane Roe." There is no breakdown between the two names, implying joint ownership. We are thinking we should credit and acknowledge each separately for 50% of the shares. Is that a valid approach?

I would try to contact the broker to determine whether the stock was jointly owned. However, without further documentation I tend to support your plan.

Just wondering if it isn't possible to contact the donors for clarification on how to credit this potentially split gift?

We have a reply from Schwab that both donors are 100% owners of the stock.

I was wondering how others handle request for estimated quantities for postage.  Often I'm at the mercy of criteria and it's difficult to properly estimate without running the queries.

We have a plethora of mailings which are planned several months in advance.  I'm usually asked for a quantity so they can get a check to the mail house in advance of the mailing.  Often this is 4-6 weeks in advance of the mailing.

My schedule is so tight that I do not have the time to run the queries necessary to give them that number, knowing that it will certainly change once I run the actual queries producing the files for the mailing.

I've suggested a "kitty" at the mail house, but they are opposed to that.

Sometimes the queries are already written and other times, these are new queries.  I will have to run the queries twice, once for the postage quantity and the second time for the actual files.

    Thanks for any input!
