  • 1.  Split Gifts in Raisers Edge

    Posted 03-31-2025 07:38 AM

    HI,

We get few donors who pledge to multiple gifts, to multiple campaigns/funds - across multiple years.

If we enter these gifts in multiple lines (separated based on campaign/fund), we do not get the correct result for largest gift.

So we are planning to enter these as one gift line - and split gifts. But we are not sure, if this causes any issues.

    Any feedback would be helpful.

    Thanks

I would consider asking this question to the Facebook Raiser's Edge support group

There are literally hundreds of posts about the ends and outs of split gifts. I think a recent pole showed the majority of users do not use the split gift to functionality and instead enter such a gift as separate gift records. It's certainly easier, but it does create certain reporting issues.

At previous org, we avoided split gifts in RE and would enter as separate. Made for easy reporting.

Here split gifts are used all the time. It is much cleaner for metrics on # of gifts, largest gifts, etc. It just took some getting used to when pulling data/reporting. User just needs to pull split amount for reports. It has actually worked much  better than I expected.

Another place for thoughts about split gifts is the BB community forums. Recurring topic.

    Thanks JoAnn.
Yes, I think we need to get used to this and use split amounts in all reports

    Thanks

One problem with recording what I would call "Multi designation gifts" As separate gift records is that it makes it very difficult to get the full picture of

How many gifts a particular constituent made. What if they sent one check but had three designations, yet they consider it a single "Gift"?

What if you were trying to determine what is the average gift size per donor?

What if you are trying to determine how many major gifts in your institution you have (Let's say $25,000 and higher It's what you call a major gift), Yet you have a number of individuals who wrote a single check for $25,000, but they had multiple designations.

In all of these cases you have to work some calculation magic so that the design designations are being reflected and grouped properly.

    Thank David.

I am preparing my notes with all changes in the calculations that will have to be done, if we start using this.
Yes, a lot of combinations to be taken care of.

Thanks to all for your help in this
