  • 1.  Shipping and Handling of a Art Collection

    Posted 02-07-2025 10:29 AM
    Hi team,

We have a donor who is gifting an art collection and also has offered to pay for the shipping and handling to get the items to our University. Can we count the payment for the shipping and handling as a gift? (its quite a large amount!)

    Thank you,

No. At least not unless you assume ownership/title/insurance/etc. in advance of the material being shipped. Otherwise, these costs are the donor's responsibility and not a deductible gift.

Good to know! Our gift agreement, accepting the gift, will be signed before the shipment of the art (which is our normal process anyway). We will request from the donor a copy of the bill of sale and use that value. As always, thanks John!

Another way to handle this is for you to pay all costs associated with transporting the donation to you and allow the donor to make a cash contribution to you to cover YOUR expenses. That's also much cleaner for the donor as the other way results in a GIK and a receipt that does not reflect any value.
