  • 1.  Recognition for "Gifts" that are not recognized as gifts by the IRS or CASE - mostly interested in Affinaquest Advancement RM feedback

    Posted 05-07-2025 03:11 PM

    Hi all,

I am interested in how other Affinaquest Advancement RM users are handling situations where you want to record and recognize when someone gifts you something that is not considered a gift in the eyes of the IRS or CASE. Examples include things like software licenses or a partial interest, like use of an event space, etc...

Are you using the "Service" type Gift Method in Smart Batch, simply creating a Soft Credit only gift record, or some other way?

    Many thanks,

John, I can't remember from my last AQ project - does the platform allow you to create different gift types? On CRMs where you can do that, I urge folks to create a new gift type of NG for Non-Gift. With that, you can program the backend to easily keep those transactions from feeding to the GL and producing receipts. They also stand out as being non-gifts on reports and online so that fundraisers don't get confused!

If AQ does not allow this, and assuming the "Service" type blocks receipts and the GL feed, that's the route I would go.

    Thanks, John.

Smart Batch in Affinaquest Advancement RM, is pretty locked down so the I believe the only way to add a gift type (method) is through an enhancement request. In Smart Batch 2.0 you can use Soft Credit as an option without having a corresponding hard credit but other than that, Service is as close as it gets.

    Thanks,

    John

I am not a fan of "soft-credit-only" solutions. Unless it's incredibly obvious that there is no associate hard credit, I have seen countless staff hours wasted "looking" for the associated hard credit when a gift officer only sees the recognition credit. So, for those organizations that haven't any other option, I urge them to add a comment on the actual gift - in all caps - that reads "SOFT CREDIT ONLY FOR RECOGNITION." Still, that also can raise questions . . . .
