  • 1.  Publishing Stock/Securities transfer information

We have not historically published our stock/securities transfer details (Bank Name, Acct #, etc.) on our website.  We have the donor request that information via an email link.  My VP is asking if we can eliminate that step and post the information on our site directly.  I have found several schools that do so but wanted to know if that is best practice.  Thoughts/insight?

I recommend not. The last thing you want are stocks landing in your brokerage account without knowledge. Those transactions don't have names tied to them. The only way you know who the donor is, is by them reaching out ahead of time to get the instructions.

That is a horrible practice.  It causes you to receive stock gifts without any communication with the donor or their broker, leaving you with donations coming in with absolutely no idea who the stock came from!

While some institutions do this, they also spend hours and days trying to track down unknown donors.

Please see my attached paper on this topic.

We experienced some of the issues that John and Jeff have mentioned, not knowing who the donor is so we created a Microsoft Form for donors/brokers to fill out with the information we need and when they submit the form we set up an automated process with Power Automate that will email the stock instructions to them. This is a new process, so we have only received notification of a couple of gifts, but it helps the donor not have to wait for a response while also ensuring we have some information about their gift.

We have done the same thing that Dan describes.  There's a link on our Ways to Give page for Gifts of Securities; there they come upon the form which prompts them through a few simple fields that we need to be able to identify the donor and the stock gift; and when they submit, our DTC information is there.  It's worked great.
