Hi all,  I've been thrown a curveball this morning about how to take a pledge when the donor doesn't really know the what the total amount of the pledge will be.
Think of a a scenario where I am going to walk a long distance, and you pledge $1 per mile I walk. You don't know how far I'll walk but later I'll come back and tell you and collect on your pledge. If I walk 100 miles, then your pledge became $100.

Has anyone set something like this up before? I can see how this would work going door to door with a clipboard, but for online forms, and given our firm operational rules about what we need to document a pledge, I am thinking this really not an adviseable thing.
    Thoughts?

I have seen variations on this elsewhere. You cannot record a bonafide pledge - unless the donor stipulates a minimum amount.

In most cases (where CRMs allow it), clients have recorded $0 pledges to reflect the commitment and avoid being concurrently solicited for something else.

But there's nothing here you can count on - only the money as it comes in the door.

    Hey there, Susan!

Completely agree with John. I would go on to suggest not attempting to post any sort of commitment transaction in your database at all. IMHO, particularly from a gift entry perspective, the easiest route is to simply add any contributions as outright gifts when they are actually received.

Perhaps consider having the participants hand out a response device and envelope when they are queueing up their supporters. If there is a need to soft credit participants, then either have that noted by name (or appeal code) on the response device. Honestly, as easy as it is to set up QR codes anymore, why not set up reply devices that can be mailed or cc gifts that can be directed via QR code? Just a few ideas...

Good luck and best regards - Amy
