  • 1.  Pledge being paid by DAF.

    Posted 04-20-2023 03:23 PM

I know that a gift being paid by DAF cannot be paid toward a pledge. However, I have recently received a pledge and not told it was going to be paid by DAF (that's where the checks are originating). Also, I have received a promise that will be paid by DAF. Can I enter a pledge on the foundation record and soft credit the donor? I need to be able to pull the promised amount as this is for a campaign and the gifts must be reported to the bank for lending purposes, another foundation (for the purpose of a matching gift), and trustees for campaign progress. I could enter it as a pledge and remove from the auditable list, but I don't like that idea.

Any ideas of another way to enter a gift type the functions similar to a pledge and can be processed in that manner?

If it gets entered as a pledge, with the pledge amount being reduced with each payment. That will get reported twice, as we report cash gifts and pledges to trustees monthly. There needs to be a way to this without duplicating the numbers for the purpose of reporting.

    Please advise.

    Thank you.

Only if the Foundation signed the pledge agreement can you record the pledge there.

You could record a non-binding pledge on the individual's record and reduce it as outright gifts come in. But you would need to execute a different pledge agreement.

The attached paper might be useful.

    Hi Denise,

The typical practice is to write down the pledge as DAF payments come through. The way to prevent double-counting is to modify the report so that it reduces the Pledges Receivable balance by the amount of the write-offs.
