  • 1.  Measuring Academic Deans on Fundraising Performance

We would like to quantify the impact of our Academic Deans' fundraising efforts on the institution. One way that we have done this in the past is the straightforward measure of whether or not the school met its fundraising goal.  However, this skips past the leading indicators that our fundraisers are measured on, like visits and solicitations, which are also important ways that Deans participate in the fundraising process. How does your institution assess the fundraising efforts of Academic Deans? Are there fundraising measures that roll up into the annual performance review for Deans?

Many thanks for your help with this!  I've looked in the archives and am ordering "A Dean's Handbook for Philanthropy" from CASE, but was also hoping for real-world examples from colleagues as well.

    Best,

I suggest that these individuals - and I include Board members in this category - be included in your standard Prospect Management program. If an external team member is expected to cultivate a prospect, they must first be trained on the CRM and instructed on using the prospect management module (or their support staff).

I assign these staff members as either the lead or team members for a prospect, and they are given a formal portfolio. They must follow the standard protocol for recording moves, visits, contacts, contact reports, etc. This way, productivity reports are available to track their activity. Further, they participate in standard prospect management, portfolio review, and prospect strategy meetings.

    Hi Sylvia,

At another institution that I worked at, we tracked and associated any philanthropic efforts from Deans via their outreach involvement via contact reports, or linkages to associated Prospect or Proposal Records for a donor or prospect.   We asssigned a specific solicitor coding to reflect such efforts.  While often they were not closing the gift, we wanted to track and recognize their efforts and involvement in the cultivation, solicitation or stewardship process.

Via this tracking and coding, we were able to produce a scorecard for Dean philanthropic activity.
