  • 1.  Matching Gift language in gift agreement/MOU

For those who permit matching gift funds to count toward fulfilling an intended gift commitment (understanding those gifts can't pay against a pledge), do you have language that you use in your gift agreement to indicate that intent? I've found examples for DAF's, but I haven't been successful in finding ones with matching gift language.

    Hi Jennifer,

We permit matching gifts to count while ensuring that the individual is ultimately responsible for the whole amount by inserting the following language into the gift agreement:

The Donor is responsible for the pledged amount in its entirety.  Without limiting the foregoing, the Donor anticipates that $X in matching gifts from Matching Gift Company will also be contributed to the Fund.  If any such gifts from Matching Gift Company are received by the University before the Donor has completed their pledged donation, as identified below, the pledge commitment of the Donor will be decreased by an amount up to the amount of the matching gifts received from Matching Gift Company.

Thanks that is super helpful! Making sure the inidvidual is responsible for the whole amount is also what I was aiming for.
