    If someone pays for their own travel expenses to assist with an event for the College, can those travel expenses be considered a gift-in-kind?

    Maybe. The IRS allows volunteers to deduct certain expenses related to their volunteer work. Usually, those are not worth the effort to obtain documentation and verify the costs. I often recommend providing the donor with a letter that confirms the date and times of the volunteer activity and states that the donor can share it with their tax preparer when determining any possible deduction. 

    FWIW, with the higher standard deduction limits it's unlikely most of your donors (maybe 1 in 11) will itemize anyway.

    Paying for your own travel for volunteering on behalf of a charity is deductible under some circumstances, but it is not a gift to the nonprofit, and there is no requirement to present a charitable acknowledgement to the IRS to substantiate the deductions.
