Hi there,
Before I communicate with this donor I'd like some wisdom as to the crediting of the gift. There was a mailer we sent in Mar 2022, which was received by the son of a donor who (unbeknownst to us) passed in 2021. I just received the response device from the Mar 2022 mailing, filled out by the son in the name of his father. A check accompanies the response device, from the son's account. Clearly the intent was to give a gift in the father's name, but as the father's name is not on the actual check, am I legally obligated to record the hard credit to the son (assumption here is we could honor the father by a soft credit and a note of "in memory" etc.). Let me know your thoughts!
