  • 1.  Gift Agreement language

Curious what others do when you receive a gift agreement that states to be paid in 2022 and you are asked to book a pledge. Do you book a pledge with a due date of 12/31/2022? Do you not book a pledge because the language is vague? What is your practice? Trying to settle a debate.

    Thanks.

I ask the donor about their intention and record a payment schedule based on that input.

It's not generally appropriate to guess about a donor's intention.  Your gift officers should be getting specifics.

PS - Not booking any pledge isn't an option.  Even if you do not wish to contact the donor, knowing 2022 is sufficient.  And, since 12/31/2022 is the end of the year, you could use that date.  However, at many institutions, they leave a "due date" off and record the pledge as of "today."

Without a donor's input, the date I would have a debate over is 2023.  That could mean either the end of the fiscal year (6/30/2023) or the calendar year (12/31/2023).

Anyway, ask the DO to get more specificity from the donor!
