    John,

    I came across this old thread. Does this mean that some campus organizations, for instance a rugby club, are unable to have a gift designated towards them as part of the colleges fund raising efforts?

    Most student organizations and clubs cannot receive deductible donations. There are a few exceptions for some sporting groups, and I believe the distinction pertains to differences between varsity sports, intramural teams, clubs, and social groups. You must take the IRS regs to Counsel and ask them to rule.

    The attached IRS audit guide from this year might be helpful. However, there have not been any changes to the IRS's stance on this topic in over fifty years.
