  • 1.  Fiscal sponsorship and fundraising totals

    Posted 05-09-2024 11:29 AM

My organization serves as a fiscal sponsor for two other organizations. I know that we are required to include contributions received for these organizations on our financial statements. But I'm curious to know if other fiscal sponsors also include these gifts in their fundraising totals? My CEO would like me to include them, but I worry that it will skew our fundraising data. Per the terms of our fiscal sponsorship agreement, we do not solicit any gifts on their behalf, nor do we steward those gifts outside of issuing a tax receipt. Cultivation, solicitation and all other stewardship is handles by the organizations.

    Thank you,

    Stephanie

Under CASE Guidelines, we do not count pass-through donations.

Unless you are actively involved in the programs for which these funds are solicited (meaning your organization participates fully in whatever programming these donations are for), you should not count them in fundraising totals. To do so would overstate the productivity of your fundraising staff. Furthermore, as you are not spending money on your programming, your donors will be confused about how much money you raise for your programs.

Agree with John. A more relevant number to report would be your fee income from fiscal sponsorship, though it would be program income, not a part of your fundraising totals.
