Hello, my VP of University Advancement wanted me to post this question.

We just heard that the University is receiving a $3M Federal Grant, which University Advancement was the one that secured this grant. We know and understand that this grant doesn't count towards are philanthropic totals, so we are not counting towards are giving totals. But he wanted to know if other institutions track/report grants like this that were procured by UA. He would like to come up with a way to report this internally within the University. I look forward to hearing your thoughts…thx, D

Yes indeed. Many Advancement programs track these and other "non-countable" activities such as partial interests and services. The "easiest" way to do it is to record the amount as a soft-credit-only transaction. $0 hard credit. This avoids and possible counting or misunderstanding on reports.

Some CRMs, however, don't play well without a hard-credit dollar amount. For those clients, I suggest creating a gift type of "NG" for Non-Gift." Of course, that means you have to change all your reporting and train your staff. But it works.

    Hi Darrell...

I have also seen a trend where advancement units report "total impact".  For reporting, philanthropic giving is listed and then "below the line" is listed grants and other transactions that have supported the institution and raised by advancement.
