Would registrations for an event be considered a donation? The cost of registration is $50 but free for some that registered early. This is a peer-to-peer fundraising event in which each participant must reach their goal ($300 minimum). Each participant receives goods of food, jersey, t-shirt, swag (FMV over $300 minimum goal) but only if they raise their minimum through other individual sponsors or self-sponsor, so they are "committed" to raise funds prior to receiving any goods and do not receive any goods based on registration (each participant has option to withdraw 30 days prior to event and would not receive any goods).
Would a donation receipt be required for the $50 registration since no goods/services are based on the registration (some paid $0 for registration)?
Since donations are coming from other individuals to support a participant (in most cases), would QPQ receipting apply to self-sponsored donations? How would you handle receipting for the goods received in such a case since participants receive once they commit to raising funds, so technically a donation is required to receive goods.
