We recently received an estate gift.

What is the best practice to enter these gifts?

As the constituent (say XXX) was marked deceased, should a new record be created saying "Estate of XXX" and gift entered under this new record?

Or should it be entered in the deceased's record?

    Thanks

As the individual established the bequest while they were alive - and often there's a bequest expectancy on their record - my practice is to create an "alias" name on that record for "Estate of..." and enter the gift (often like a pledge payment) there. The receipt will then reflect "Estate of..." but the gift will appear on the same record as all other gifts made by that individual.

However, if the death establishes a completely independent trust (aka Testamentary Trust) with trustees determining where gifts should go, that does require a new record.

    Cool.

And what record type would you use for that new record?
