  • 1.  Donations from Military Penions

    Posted 09-22-2025 01:53 PM

    Good afternoon,

We just had a donor reach out that is planning on giving through her military pension. This is the first time we have had this happen, so I am wondering if anyone has any insight as to whether this should be treated like an IRA gift and what the tax implications are for this type of gift.  She asked for a 1099 from us which is something new to us as well. Does anyone accept these types of gifts and have any advice on how to process and receipt them?

    Thank you in advance!

    Colleen

This is a bit backwards :-). You may need to educate the donor a bit.

A military pension is retirement income. The individual will receive a pension check, and that's treated as income. And the US Government will issue a 1099. They, in turn, will write you a check like any other donation, and you will issue a gift receipt.

That said, the donor may have arranged for the US Government to send a check directly to you. In which case, it is still a gift from the individual for which you will issue a receipt to the individual. It's also possible the check issuer will need a copy of your W-9 (not 1099) for their records.
