  • 1.  Donating Door Prizes or Monetary Donations to Purchase a Door Prize

    Posted 12 days ago

    Hello,

We received a letter from our Nursing department that they are sending out to constituents asking for prizes or monetary donations in support of our health fair. It states that all donations will be used as door prizes, or used to purchase door prizes, to encourage residents' attendance.

Are the donated door prizes and monetary donations towards purchasing door prizes for the event considered charitable donations that would need to be processed through our Advancement Services department, so they can also receive a proper tax receipt? And if so, is the money a standard cash gift but the door prize could be a gift-in-kind?

    Thank you.

The prizes in-kind donations. However, unless they are valued at over $250, the donor does not need a receipt to substantiate the donation and receive a tax deduction. Under most circumstances, I would not advise recording these contributions in your Advancement CRM. The monetary gifts are normal cash contributions. They also do not require receipts, but best practices in donor stewardship call for receipting most cash gifts. In general, cash gifts signal a higher propensity and capacity to give, and donors are more likely to expect a receipt.

Thank you, Isaac for your quick response! I was leaning the same way as this would involve more efforts in recording then leading to future data/stewardship utilization and benefits. I will let my team know this info.
