  • 1.  Delivery expenses for an in-kind gift

    Posted 04-28-2025 10:33 AM

We have a donor who is donating a painting and they have requested "Can I ask for a paper saying I donated the painting and just want to take the donated transportation cost off my taxes?  Just the cost of the SUV and gas.".

I am not sure if that is deductible or not, I lean towards not, but could someone point me to the IRS pub that would discuss the situation.

If it is deductible, we would just state what we received (the painting) and thank them for transporting it to the College with no value.

    Thanks,

Only certain volunteer expenses associated with their work for a charity are deductible. These are outlined in IRS Publication 526.

I do not think these expenses qualify. I agree with your plans for the receipt.

Publication 526 says you can deduct car expenses "directly related to the use of your car in giving services to a charitable organization."

I'd say this is deductible at the normal vehicle mileage rate.
