  • 1.  DAF soft credit to company vs. company owner

    Posted 07-11-2023 12:33 PM

    Hello,

We have a donor whose company funds a DAF at Fidelity (he is the company owner). If we receive a grant from the company's DAF, would soft credit go to the company, since they are the entity that funds the DAF, or could soft credit go to the donor who owns the company, since presumably he is the person who decides how much his company contributes to the DAF and the recipients of grants? I should also mention that a limitation of our current CRM is that we can only allocate soft credit to one record at 100%. If you could share what your institution does or if there is an IRS rule that needs to be followed in cases like this, I would appreciate it.

You can give soft credit to both!  I would! I do not know of any CRM that limits soft credits!

Oh, but if you are limited - other than needing a new CRM - I would soft credit the company as it was their DAF. But if you are cultivating the individual I would think twice!
