  • 1.  Crediting when pass-through org is involved

    Posted 02-16-2024 10:29 AM

I need your help with the following scenario. We have a company, let's call it BMS Corp, whose employee, John Doe, gave a gift. BMS Corp is a matching gift company. BMS Corp sends their match to ABC Aid Foundation America C/O XYZ LLC who is the pass through organization. ABC Aid Foundation America C/O XYZ LLC sends my charity a check with their company name, ABC Aid Foundation America C/O XYZ LLC, on the check.

We are going to give our Constituent, John Doe, soft credit. Done.

Who gets the hard/legal credit? BMS Corp? ABC Aid Foundation America? XYZ LLC?

I'm still a little green with gift entry, so I need you to lay out for me the crediting in this scenario.

    Many Thanks!

Stephen, ABC Aid Foundation is not a pass-through organization in the strictest sense. That would imply they are serving as an agent and really do not "own" the gift. That is not true, here.

ABC Aid Foundation is the legal donor - just as is true with Benevity's America Online Giving Foundation.

ABC Aid receives legal credit. And in my book, both BMS and John Doe receive soft credit.
