Seeking advice/best practice in a situation I haven't encountered before:
We've received a credit card dispute on a $100 donation made last month to one of our athletic team crowdfunding campaigns with the reason being "Fraud transaction - unauthorized." The donor is a friend and this was their first gift, so we have no established relationship with them; the assumption would be that they're a friend or family member of one of the team members.
My first question is whether we accept or challenge the chargeback, but my bigger question is whether we should do any outreach to the donor or take any other action? Is it feasible that they intentionally made the gift but forgot by the time they reviewed their credit card statement? But if it might be fraudulent, isn't it also possible that the email address is forged if we were to try to contact the donor that way?
How have others handled credit card disputes like this?
