  • 1.  Book royalties - how to credit

    Posted 04-09-2025 11:06 AM

Just got this message from a development staff:

We are going to be getting regular ACH payments for the royalties from the book written by Paul G called ___ from the Geological Society of America.   The funds should go into the (established Paul G named)Scholarship.  The following is the name, address, and contact for them. The first ACH payment should arrive in the next week or two. This is not a donation from the Geological Society of America – it is a gift from Paul G since he assigned the royalties to this scholarship.

We have already received a check earlier this month from the publisher which due to lack of other documentation was entered as a donation from the publisher with notation that it was royalties.

Are gifts from Paul G? Or should he only be soft-credited? I have not dealt with assigned royalties previously.

    Thanks in advance.

You will need to contact the publisher. These can be gifts from Paul but only if they treat the funds as income to him - meaning they will issue a 1099 at the end of each year. An individual cannot claim a tax-deduction for funds that do not belong to them. So, even though the payments come directly from the publisher they must still show Paul as "owning" the funds on their books!

So shared your response, John, and was told that Paul is deceased.

Do we check with publisher to see if they are sending a 1099 to his estate? Are 1099s sent to estates?
