  • 1.  Bequest Counting

We received a $500,000 bequest intention in 2019 and recorded it at $75,000, based on the donor's age.  We are now being asked if we can add another $100,000.00 to the same bequest intention since the donor is older now and record the addition in our current campaign.  We don't have a lot of donors in their 50's making bequest intentions, so this is a question I haven't gotten before.  What is the best practice?

Typically you count the bequest at its full value (to you) when it is made known. You never adjust it due to market conditions or other factors. However, CASE does permit the counting of any difference if the bequest is realized during the same reporting period (campaign) as when the bequest was recorded.
