  • 1.  Awarding Scholarship for Top Performing P2P Participants

    Hi, All!

We had one of our departments reach out and inform us that they would like to use their department operating fund to award scholarships to their top performing students in a recent peer to peer campaign. While the donors may not know who the top performers are at the time of gift, they may know the small group of students within the department, and can see how well the peer to peer campaign is doing, and which students are winning. Considering this, as well as the ethics of bonuses tied in with fundraising - have any of you seen this/do any of you do this? We are encouraging this group to compensate the students with non-monetary incentives, instead.
    Thank you!
    -Hillary

This is a question and a proposal you will need to run by Counsel and Financial Aid. The latter will definitely have something to say about this, as the awards may affect the student's ability to receive other financial aid.

Counsel must rule whether donors may wield too much influence or control - and whether the small number of possible beneficiaries will violate the IRS stance on the size of the charitable class.
