  • 1.  Video Recording for Tutorials

    Howdy FUNDSVCS,

    I am in the process of creating new documentation for our policies and procedures, and was thinking about incorporating some video tutorials.  Does anyone know of a good functional software that I can use to create the video screen capture that I would able to use and add some simple narration to help explain what is being shown on screen.  I believe that this could be very helpful for some of our staff, and in particular for training on how and why we do certain processes in a specific way.

    Good Afternoon Dariel,

    There are a few options out there, but one "low-cost" method that i've been using is "Zoom".  I've  set up a meeting where i'm the only participant and used the "screen sharing" and record functionality to make my videos.  Zoom then creates an audio (only) and video/audio files for your future use.  For post-production, i've used many tools, but the actual capturing video/audio has been Zoom.

    I have used Zoom for this purpose on a one-off basis as well.  It doesn't have all the functionality as dedicated apps will, but it works really nicely for the vast majority of what we need it for.

    I use loom .  Its an add on to the Gmail suite.  My team loves the videos

    My favorite simple app for this is https://icecreamapps.com/Screen-Recorder/ which can record your screen or any area of it, and can also record your webcam so you can have your face in the corner talking. It's really easy to use, exports to all the formats you need, and it's $29 for a lifetime license.

    A step up from there is Snap10 from Ashampoo https://www.ashampoo.com/en/usd/pde/2024/multimedia-software/snap-10. It has many more affordances for creating consumable bits of content out of a longer recording, eg making an animated gif out of a longer video (perfect for pointing people to that option or checkbox they always forget about!) Other key features are the ability to pause and then continue a recording, which is great when you realize you didn't stage your screen exactly right. It can also display your keyboard input on screen when you're recording, which is great for teaching shortcut keys or highlighting that you need to shift-click or ctrl-click something. You can also use different visual mouse effects for that. If you're planning on making videos regularly, it's a great option, for about $20.

    I reached out to our Academic Technology department and found that we had video recording technology available to us for our use. We were able to record the screens as we went through step by step and then layered audio recording separately. We were able to pause the video portions to time with explanations as well as add arrows and highlight specific areas of the screen.
