Hello,

I have a donor who wants to commit to $500K over 5 years, but only wants $25K documented on the SOI for each year as a minimum payment. The donor is saying that they will pay the full $500K by the end of year 5, so can I still document this and breakdown the payment plan as a "minimum" installment for each year? Am I missing anything that is a red flag? Any advice or examples from others would be helpful.

I would be questioning why?  Is it related to a DAF or something that he does not want it shown what he has committed to?

If the payment plan does not add up to $500K how will it be booked?

It is not a DAF, basically a really savvy finance person. We've gone through the why with the donor, and our business office no longer books pledges, so it's more just how to document it on the SOI.

We don't list minimum payments and always include a schedule with the anticipated amount per year, but preface that with the following:

 

The Donor hereby pledges a total of $X to the University. This pledge may be paid outright in full or over a period of four years to be fulfilled on or before December 31, 2023. Without limiting the foregoing, the Donor and University anticipate that payments in support of this pledge will be made annually, according to the following schedule:
