    Hi,

We have a donor who donated a collection of rare books about 5 years ago. Any advice on how long we have to keep the books as part of the library collection? Our librarian would like to sell them if possible and I am trying to gather all information for her. Thank you!

Unless there was a mutual agreement with the donor regarding retention, the books were irrevocably given to you to do with as you want.  In theory, you could have sold them the next day.

Do keep in my that even without an understanding, the donor may have unwritten expectations regarding the collection.  In the interest of donor relations, you may want to have a conversation with them regarding your plans.

Thanks John. The letter says that the donor "trusts the judgement" to use the books as we see fit. The donor also has been labeled inactive as she's the last living member of the family connected with the school, and she hasn't been in contact since the gift was made in 2013. Appreciate your advice on this situation!
