  • 1.  Legal/Hard credit for Credit Card Gift

    Posted 03-07-2022 08:16 AM

Hello, I've searched the archives and there are many posts regarding Company Credit Card vs. Personal Credit Card, and parents making a gift from "little Billy", but I have not seen anything regarding how people determine who to credit on an online gift when you may not know if the donor or registrant name given is the actual name on a credit card being used. Depending on how our online system captures donor information, we may only see the name given to us: Donor who is an alum, but in reality may have been paid with spouse's credit card, or parent appears to be registering for an event (but form might have been filled out and paid by their alumna daughter). Do other organizations always have two separate sections (ie. "Donor or Registrant" section and a "Billing Name/Address")? We may be moving to a platform that only gives us basic information, which may not include: billing name, billing address, or credit card type. How far are we obligated to dig? Looking forward to hearing how others are handling this. Thanks. Robert

You pretty much have to believe you have honest donors.  Require they provide the "Name as it appears on the card" and use that.  I do not know what else you can do.  However, if the donor is audited the IRS will ask for copies of bank statements.

I have contacted the issuing bank when I have had doubts.  But even there I can typically only confirm business versus personal and no other details.
